SPWLA ASET SIG WEBINAR

TITLE:  THE INSURANCE RATIONALE FOR CARBON CAPTURE AND STORAGE

SPEAKER: Dr. Rodney Garrard, Geo Energy Adviser, Arch Insurance International

SUMMARY: Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is one of the pivotal solutions to decarbonise hard-to-abate industries as well as to achieve negative emissions to achieve net zero targets. While the first CCS projects receive significant government subsidies, scaling up of the solution will require private-sector investments on the open market. Hence, how investable and ultimately insurable CCS projects are should be addressed. In this presentation we highlight some of the specific risks and highlight the ongoing development of risk protection insurance instruments in case of, for example (and not limited too), low probability high impact events (e.g., CO2 leakage).

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:  Rodney Garrard is a geologist with over 23 years of international experience in the subsurface realm. Before joining Arch as Geo Energy Advisor late 2023, Rodney worked extensively in the upstream oil and gas industry for 18 years before pivoting into the nuclear waste disposal industry in Switzerland in 2018. Following the completion of the data acquisition and site selection process for geological storage of nuclear waste, Rodney decided to make use of diverse experiences of subsurface projects spanning five continents over the past two decades in the global energy insurance industry.
