SPWLA Nuclear Logging SIG: An Introduction

Objective:  The purpose of the Nuclear Logging SIG is to be a focal point to advance the science, technology and application of nuclear measurements utilized for subsurface characterization and monitoring. See the Nuclear SIG By-laws document for details.

A Brief History: The Nuclear Logging SIG was established in 2000 by a group of oil industry nuclear experts led by a Coordination Committee, under the Log Characterization Consortium (LCC).  In 2012, like all SIGS, it was brought under the umbrella of the SPWLA as a Chapter-at-Large with its own By-Laws and Executive Committee, after the LCC was disbanded.

Activities: Over the years, the Nuclear Logging SIG dealt with the following areas:

  • Carbon/Oxygen (C/O) logging tools and their interpretation challenges in Complex geometries and compositions
  • Early interpretation challenges for Nuclear Logging-while-drilling (LWD) measurements.
  • Development of a technical position on alternatives to chemical radiative sources used in well logging
  • Input by individual SIG members on radioactive source challenges to the National Academy of Science panel asked by US Congress for a report on industrial sources and their replacement (2007) and an Interagency Task Force (2010)
  • Written input to a Congressional Subcommittee, on potential effect of a reduction in the He3 inventory worldwide; He3 is used in neutron detectors.
  • Input on future of API Test Pits on University of Houston Campus
  • Prepared drafts  on density/PE and Neutron Standards -under review
  • A Catalog of nuclear Logging tools is being prepared

Nuclear Logging SIG is federal tax exempt under Section 501 (c) (6) .
