Search Publications Help/FAQs
What documents are available?
Papers presented at SPWLA symposiums and those published in the SPWLA peer-reviewed technical journal Petrophysics.
How many papers are in the library and how far back do they go?
The library contains more than 2,900 papers dating back to 1960 (over 8Gbytes of data).
SPWLA Annual Symposium Transaction abstracts through 2006 and and papers through 2005
SPWLA Journal (Log Analyst and Petrophysics) abstracts and articles through 2004
The total grows each year as we add the current symposium papers and Petrophysics articles
With that many documents, how do I find what I need?
The SPWLA publication database has been constructed to allow either basic or more complex searches with 'intelligence'. Searchable fields now include title, author, company, year, and abstract keywords. For example, if you enter:
Symposium Abstracts = Yes
Journal Abstracts = Yes
Year > 1995
Abstract Keyword contains: NMR
will result in the search returning all symposium papers or journal articles published AFTER 1995 with 'NMR' somewhere in its abstract. Entering more criteria will force the search to return only those abstracts that match all of the criteria that you have entered, for example:
Symposium Abstracts = Yes
Journal Abstracts = Yes
author's name = Smith
company = XYZ
Year = 1995
Title Keyword contains NMR and Abstract Keyword contains diffusion
will result in the search returning only those symposium transaction papers or journal articles published by Author Smith for company XYZ in 1995 with 'NMR' in the title and containing 'diffusion' somewhere in the abstract.
Leaving a field blank will result in that field being ignored in the search. The utility of our publication database file allows for fast, powerful searches. You can easily search for the latest papers by a particular author or company on a particular topic, or conduct thorough research on early published topics. (Note that options on the year search are '>' and '<' and not '=>' or '<=')
How do I download a paper from the database?
Individual papers can be downloaded for $10.00 (US) each. Current SPWLA members may download up to 10 papers per year free as part of their membership.
To download a paper:
From the result list (note you can select the number of results to display), you can then read the entire abstract. Should you wish to download a particular paper or two, add the desired paper(s) and then select 'check out' from the top menu bar.
You will then be taken to a secure page on the SPWLA web site (click yes to accept our certificate). The first page will ask for your member name and number. If you are not a current member, leave blank.
You will then see a page that lists the number of free downloads you have left. Select the number of downloads you wish to use for this order, then please fill in your name, address and email. NOTE: Although a credit card is asked for, you do NOT need enter it if you are using your free downloads. It is there for those that have used up their free downloads, or wish to pay for the paper instead of using a free download.
You will see a page where you enter your name, email, postal address, and credit card information.
Submitting your order will then take you to a page with link(s) that you click on to download the papers you have selected. You will also be sent an email with the order information, total (if any) and download instructions. The access code provided is temporary and will work for at least 30 days, so be sure to download your paper(s) quickly.
If I download a paper online, in what format will I receive it?
Papers are downloaded as pdf files and require Adobe Acrobat Reader to view. Most of the papers in the library can be opened with Adobe Acrobat Reader v.5, but some of the newer documents require v. 6 or higher. The size of the pdf can vary depending on the length of the paper and the number of color figures in the paper. Average file size is ~ 1MB. Papers with color graphics can be 10-20 MB or more.
