ABSTRACT The Federal Electricity Commission has considered the Tertiary of N. E. Mexico a geological province with possibilities of holding coal reservoirs, mainly in the groups Wilcox, Jacksonand in the formations Queen City and Yegua. An exploration program has been elaborated with the purpose of evaluating the coal potential of these sediments. It will be initiated in the formation Queen City. This program contemplates the realization of a geological cartography in which the different formations and its major structural characteristics will be described. A second step will be the realization of detailed sedimentological studies in outcropping rocks. The former paper will be backed by subsoil studies based on geophysical logs of the wells, basically of those drilled by PEMEX in the areas of interest. There it has been possible to identify coal layers, moreover the logs are being use for the construction of stratigraphic sections, isopachs and structural maps, thus complementing surface geological data; allowing therefore the conception of sedimentary models of the different environment. Also surface exploration could be focussing the sites with greater economic attraction.
