Meeting Time/Place
The Ft Worth SPWLA chapter is being re-activated.
Next Meeting
You are cordially invited to attend the May meeting of the Fort Worth chapter of the SPWLA (Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts). You do not have to be a member of SPWLA to attend and we encourage anyone with an interest in formation evaluation and reservoir description to join us. The lunch meeting will be held on Monday, May 17th, 2010, 11:30 am , at EOG Resources, Carnige Bldg., , The address is 421, West 3rd Street, Fort Worth. The talk is on "Dielectric Dispersion Measurements and Their Applications" by Mr. Jim Hemingway.
Lunch for the talk is $ 25(cash or check in favor of Fort Worth SPWLA). The need for reservations cannot be stressed enough as an accurate headcount for lunch is extremely important. Please RSVP to FWSPWLA@gmail.com or call Jan Wallace at 817-870-9040. Reservations are needed by 12:00 PM Friday, May 14th. If you know of anyone else in your organization that might have an interest in the SPWLA, please feel free to forward this message as we are in the process of developing an email list for distribution. If you do not want to remain on the email list, please reply to the above email with the request to be removed.
We are fortunate to have Mr. Jim Hemingway, Petrophysics Advisor, Schlumberger, Houston, to speak on:
Dielectric Dispersion Measurements and Their Applications
ABSTRACT:
Dielectric measurements have been used over the past thirty years in a variety of reservoirs to determine flushed zone water-filled porosity in formations with fresh or unknown water salinity. This measurement is particularly useful in heavy oil reservoirs as little invasion occurs, making the un-invaded zone oil saturation approximately equal to the invaded zone oil saturation. A new dielectric measurement has been developed which provides dielectric permittivity and conductivity at multiple depths of investigation as a result of multiple frequencies and receiver spacings. This next generation dielectric measurement is made over a large range of operating frequencies using an array of antennas with two separate orientations. A total of 9 measurements of attenuation and phase shift are made at 4 different frequencies allowing a true measure of dielectric dispersion. An inversion of these measurements can compute a simple water-filled porosity as was done with older generation dielectric tools based on a single permittivity measurement. But by measuring permittivity and conductivity at different frequencies, antenna spacings, and orientations we are able to see an invasion profile based on water filled porosity measurements at different depths of investigation. By inverting all the measurements it is possible to solve for salinity, invasion depth and other environmental parameters which led to unpredictable results with previous generation single frequency tools. Further processing will make it possible to solve for textural parameters such as saturation and cementation exponents or cation exchange capacity.
BIO:
Jim Hemingway has been with Schlumberger since 1980 starting as a field engineer and has held various log analyst and engineering positions during his career. He is currently based in Houston. Jim has authored many papers about pulsed neutron logging and log interpretation. James received a BS degree in chemistry from Emporia State University in 1978 and a BS degree in chemical engineering from Texas A&M University in 1979. From 1982 to 1997 he held several assignments as a log analyst, interpretation center manager and interpretation development engineer. Jim worked in Ventura and Bakersfield from 1990 to 1997 as the interpretation center manager. In 1997 he joined the Formation Evaluation department at the Schlumberger Sugar Land Product Center working on the RSTPro* tool and "Three-Phase Holdup" interpretation techniques. He moved to Paris in 2001 as a new technology advisor responsible for teaching the applications of new technology for formation evaluation. In 2005 he was promoted to the position of nuclear technology advisor. He has been based in Houston since 2010 as a Petrophysics Advisor.
