How can MRI logs help improve Reservoir Characterization and minimize Well Testing cost

El Sr. Maged Fan di a muy intresante Conferencia sobre el tema arriba mencionado.

Cerca de 20 personas asistieron a la misma.

Abstract

Complexities in the reservoir properties like low effective porosity, variations of clay content and type, effect of mixed mineralogy and matrix, etc., may thwart trustworthy reservoir evaluation using standard evaluation methods with conventional logs. Likewise, adverse effects brought on by drilling, e.g., altered formation, unknown mud filtrate effects, may generate additional concerns. Add to that unknown or questionable formation water salinity "Rw". All these factors may affect the accuracy of the interpretation versus well predictability. As a consequence of these worries, operators may resort to well testing for optimum reservoir characterization. However, well testing is usually very costly (Rig time and frac jobs are expensive) and may also be environmentally unfriendly due to the risks inherent within the mechanics of well testing. If the operator is reluctant to proceed with well testing, even if such tests appear to be the best thing to do, then there are only the logs to fall back on. On the other hand, well testing may promote unnecessary testing of zones that may not be productive. In either case, effective log evaluation would be a more preferable economic first approximation.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging "MRI" technology contributes significantly in the evaluation of such complex reservoirs because it offers in-situ formation evaluation vital to producibility and validates the conventional resistivity based log interpretation. All resistivity based log analyses require formation water salinity or "Rw" information as well as formation porosity values. In the absence of accurate "Rw" information, the MRI offers a "non-resistivity" based fluid identification and "stand alone" interpretation. In the case of complex reservoirs where standard porosity logs depend greatly on the knowledge of matrix mineralogy, again MRI logs offer porosity measurements independent to matrix or mineralogy. This presentation illustrates such cases, and offers the MRI as a mean to circumvent the "Rw" problem as well as to verify porosity without the knowledge of the mineralogy and provide a reliable permeability indicator that can be calibrated when integrated with core analysis results. The ability of MRI to detect the type of fluid is intended to influence selection and elimination of zones to be tested. In this manner, MRI helps in properly preparing for the testing procedure by pre-identifying the type of hydrocarbon in a zone and its reservoir quality in terms of permeability and porosity. Thus, the MRI serves well when it comes to deciding on the need for well testing and in enhancing the effectiveness of any particular well test.

SPWLA Argentina Chapter, Conference:

"Petrophysical Aspects of Resistivity and Permeability Anisotropy"

Abstract:

Petrophysical Aspects of Resistivity and Permeability Anisotropy

Cost effective, efficient production of hydrocarbons depends on accurate reserves estimates, reservoir architecture and hydrocarbon distribution. In addition complete reservoir, description including both horizontal and vertical permeability is critical to the development strategy. Hydrocarbon recovery efficiency depends on many factors but one key parameter is the ratio of the vertical to horizontal permeability.

There are numerous ways to estimate permeability. It is now even possible to estimate permeability from continuous formation evaluation measurements. However, it remains difficult to determine directional permeability. NMR logs are used routinely to estimate permeability, but the NMR-derived permeability is based on scalar properties (e.g., f, T2 distributions, bulk volume irreducible water) and is inherently a scalar property.

Few Formation Evaluation measurements provide directional information. Dip and image logs provide bed thickness and layer dip information. However, only crossed-dipole shear-wave acoustic tools and the new multi-component induction tools provide direct measurements of macroscopic formation anisotropy.

In this presentation, I discuss the new 3-d induction-logging tool (3DEX and then address both theoretically and with real data the computation of permeability anisotropy for bimodal sands and layered sand-shale systems.

Formation Evaluation of Sediment-Hosted Gas Hydrates

Dr. Mike Lovell (University of Leicester)

Natural gas hydrate bearing sediments are a significant worldwide methane resource and the primary reservoir of the Earth?s organic carbon. In addition to their long term potential as an energy resource, however, their presence below and at the seafloor also presents a potential hazard through possible destabilisation and methane release. Such dissociation could have consequences for seafloor slope instability and seafloor installations, as well as for global climate change. Thus in addition to viewing gas hydrate reservoirs as a potential energy resource, a thorough understanding of the physics of the sediment-hosted hydrate system is vital.

While seismic surveys and drilling of hydrate-rich sediments have been underway systematically, for some time, our knowledge of their physical and geotechnical behaviour during dissociation is embryonic. Currently, our understanding of the petrophysics of hydrate sediments is derived from: (i) experimental and theoretical studies of pure hydrate, (ii) observations of hydrate-bearing sediment core and insitu log measurements, (iii) attempts to modify petrophysical relationships for fluid-filled reservoirs to reservoirs containing a solid hydrate phase, and (iv) laboratory experiments to manufacture and study sediment-hosted hydrates.

Studies of pure hydrate provide a foundation in terms of crystal structure, composition, and temperature and pressure stability. Observations of hydrate core at ambient conditions are problematical simply because of the difficulty of preserving the insitu state of the sample during and after coring, but yield general information on the diversity of natural hydrate systems. Insitu log measurements reveal the presence of hydrates at a larger scale. The modification of classical petrophysical relationships, from Archie? Law to Acoustic Porosity Transforms allows some evaluation of the quantity and nature of hydrate systems. Meanwhile, laboratory experiments to manufacture a range of synthetic gas hydrate morphologies exhibiting different geometrical and internal structures and fabrics (from massive to disseminated) using different sediment-hosts enable detailed studies of the sediment-hosted hydrate system. Integrating this information provides a basis for the petrophysical interpretation of natural gas hydrate reservoirs, but also reveals large voids in our basic knowledge and understanding.

Meeting Information: September 11th, 2000

On September 11 Cary Purdy and Roberta Raggi from the Petroleum Open Software Corporation (POSC) treated the newly formed SPWLA Argentine Chapter to a thought provoking presentation. The intricacy, simplicity and potential of the XML World Wide Web protocol surprised and delighted many in the audience. To think that petrophysical, production and other data could be easily interchanged over the internet without the hassle of having to have a specific format reader program had instant appeal to all who battle daily with multiple log format "read' programs.

The Argentine Chapter was unanimous in conveying thanks to POSC for allowing Cary and Roberta to travel so far to spread the good word.

This meeting was held in Buenos Aires, with 22 attendants:
