ABSTRACT

Commercially prospective heavy oil accumulation was discovered in the fractured Basement Complex of the Hamaca Area of the Orinoco Belt in Eastern Venezuela while drilling the exploratory well MFC-lS. First evidence of oil saturated fractures became apparent due to anomalous and continuous heavy oil flows, mud circulation losses and accelerated drilling penetration rates. The fracture zones are characterized by consistent log reading departures. Specific responses of each individual log are discussed. Open hole completion of the zone under discussion yielded significant amounts of oil. True potential of the zone will be evaluated through coring and selective completion of the fracture zones.
