x-ray A nonnuclear electromagnetic radiation of very short wavelength, in the interval of 0.1-100 angstroms: i.e., between that of gamma rays and ultraviolet radiation. A penetrating electromagnetic radiation similar to gamma radiation. Originates from the extranuclear part of an atom.

x-ray diffraction analysis Analysis of the crystal structure of materials by passing x-rays through them and registering the diffraction (scattering) image of the x-rays.

X-Y plane A plane described by the X and Y axes. A convention used to describe an acoustic wave train recording in which the amplitude of the signal voltage is shown on the Y axis, and time in microseconds is shown on the X axis. See amplitude-time.

X-Z plane A plane described by the X and Z axes. A convention used to describe an acoustic wave train display in which the amplitude of the signal voltage is used to modulate the intensity of a photographic beam of light to produce varying photographic density on the Z axis, and time in microseconds on the X axis. See intensity modulated-time and Micro-Seismogram.
