The Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts Foundation

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES

The SPWLA Foundation was formed to support the overall purposes of the SPWLA. They are exclusively scientific and include the furtherance of the science of formation evaluation, support of colleges and universities engaged in the teaching and study of formation evaluation, and the award of scholarships and grants for study at such institutions. The SPWLA Foundation is a section 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation and all contributions are fully tax-deductible according to the United States Internal Revenue Service.

FOUNDATION ORGANIZATION

The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of five SPWLA Past Presidents, or others who have demonstrated a commitment to the benefit of SPWLA, appointed for a term of five years in such a way that each year one of the directors is replaced by a new member.

The Scholarship and Grant Committee is responsible for recommending scholarships and grants. The number and amount of such awards are determined by moneys made available by the Foundation's Board of Directors. This committee consists of representatives from the SPWLA Board, four other members, and a chairman appointed by the SPWLA Board.

HOW FUNDS ARE USED

The Foundation's assets are allocated to two endowments (Scholarship and SPWLA) from which only earnings may be spent, and two funds (Grants and SPWLA). Current assets are nearly a half-million dollars. Foundation expenses are less than 1% of assets.

SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT

Income from this endowment is used for scholarships covering costs of tuition, books, and fees. There are the following scholarship classes: 1) The SPWLA scholarship, which is a general scholarship endowment; 2) Chapter scholarships: Dallas, Denver, Houston, M&GLS, Oklahoma City, Paris(SAID), San Antonio, San Joaquin, and Tulsa; 3) Personal and Industry scholarships: Gus Archie/Shell, Walter Fertl, Al Gilreath, R.G. Hamilton, W.A. Hoyer, Bill Mills/Mobil, A.V. Messineo, M.P. Tixier and Robert Truman/Baker Atlas.

Any chapter that makes a Scholarship Endowment contribution may designate the educational institution(s) at which candidates must be in attendance to qualify for scholarships from net income generated by the chapter's contribution(s). The chapter may suggest one or more individuals to be recipients of such scholarships. However, such suggestions are not binding to the Scholarship and Grant Committee which must consider the suggested individuals in the same manner as all other candidates for scholarships. Each chapter scholarship will bear the name of the sponsoring chapter.

Scholarship awards have been presented to Junior and higher undergraduate students, and to graduate students who have demonstrated outstanding achievements and plan to pursue a career in the science of formation evaluation.

Scholarship awards of $500 and up in increments of $500 are usually offered. Grants are offered in similar amounts but may be adjusted to cover all or part of the estimated research project budget.

Grant and Scholarship Applications

Printable versions of the Grant and Scholarship applications can be found below. Applications are usually due at the SPWLA office by April 1st. Please note there are four pages to each application, each of which must be printed off.

Selection of recipients of SPWLA scholarships and grants is based upon the competitive evaluation of applications received by the Scholarship and Grant Committee of the Foundation. The international activities of the SPWLA permit and encourage the submittal of applications by qualified candidates attending or affiliated with colleges or universities either in the U.S. or abroad. The relevancy of an applicant's degree program and career objectives to formation evaluation will count highly toward a successful award
