Measuring Remaining Oil Saturation with Cased Hole Pulse Neutron Log in CO2 EOR Fields

Presented By: Zhipeng “Z” Liu,   Kinder Morgan

There are about 400 billion barrels of estimated remaining oil in place. However, quantifying remaining oil saturation has always been a critical but challenging task for petrophysicists and reservoir engineers due to the geology, and additional complexity introduced by field history. CO2 flood is a proven EOR method to recover some of the remaining oil in place, while the presence of CO2 poses additional petrophysical challenges. Conventional open hole logging and coring methods remain useful, but are limited by tool physics, wellbore, fluids, and cost. New cased hole pulse neutron logging tool and interpretation technologies offer some promise to overcome these limitation and measure remaining oil and gas saturation in CO2 flood fields. We will discuss the technology followed by its application in CO2 flood fields and other mature fields.
