ABSTRACT

Pulsed neutron logging has been a vital technology for monitoring reservoir fluid contacts, especially through casing. Depending on the reservoir and fluid type, monitoring the contacts can be done using traditional pulsed neutron logs such as Sigma (thermal neutron capture cross section) or Carbon/Oxygen (C/O) logging. After the introduction of multi-detector pulsed neutron instruments, quantification of gas saturation, especially in multi-phase reservoir system, is done using gamma-ray ratio based methodology. And, in the recent past, techniques were developed to provided 3-phase formation fluid saturation in complex reservoirs, where oil, water and gas are present in the same reservoir.

This talk primarily focuses on the technology and applications of multi-detector pulsed neutron logging tool for through-casing formation evaluation. Case-histories presented includes salinity-independent quantitative gas saturation and multi-phase formation saturation monitoring from across the world.
