IRT Corporation of San Diego, California, recently concluded the development of an engineering prototype delayed-neutron borehole logging system for Bendix Field Engineering Corporation , a prime contractor to the U. S. Department of Energy. The logging probe utilizes delayed-neutron activation analysis (DNAA) to determine the uranium concentration in the formation surrounding the borehole. One of the most important attractions of this technique is that it completely circumvents the... Details

This paper describes a system designed to measure the concentrations of potassium, uranium, and thorium in boreholes. The system is divided into a linear pulse processing subsystem that consists of the probe and part of the surface electronics, and a digital recording subsystem. Gamma rays are detected in one of two NaI (Tl) crystals, and the voltage pulses resulting from the scintillations in the crystal are linearly transmitted to the surface. The pulses are separated and counted... Details

Very much has been written the past few years on the advantages of oil muds, where oil is in the continuous phase, over the more conventional water-based muds. Oil phase muds have, in fact, greatly improved drilling performances especially in cases of hard-to-drill deviated holes as in the Gulf Coast. Also, this type of mud is used very successfully in field development drilling where formation evaluation is not of prime importance*. However, when drilling with an oil mud in areas... Details

A convenient and relatively accurate method for determining the connate water resistivity, Rw, values for wells in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming is described. This method is based on the change in the spontaneous potential (SP) response with different mud filtrate resistivities (Rm f) on repeat logging runs. The values of Rw obtained agree closely with those derived from conventional crossplot techniques of resistivity, Rt, and core porosity values.

A study has been made of the production histories of wells from Rozet and Raven fields of the Powder River Basin in Wyoming. These fields which were primarily depleted, produced from the Muddy sands of Cretaceous age and the Minnelusa sand of the Permian age, respectively. The analysis of the recoverable Hydrocarbon volume, Pd values obtained from the decline curves of the wells, extrapolated to an economic limit of 20 barrels per day (or 600 barrels per month), and the petrophysical ... There are numerous domestic and overseas interpretation techniques available to the log analysts for determining water saturation in shaly pay sands. The theory of these different interpretation methods is briefly outlined and the advantages and limitations are discussed. A comparative study of these various techniques was made using actual field examples with the effect of varying amounts of shaliness. This comparative study illustrates the practical application of these various... Details

Modern borehole measurement systems designed for fracture characterization are generally based on one of three principles: electrical conductivity of fluid-filled fractures; acoustic attenuation during propagation across fractures; and borehole wall imaging. The fracture responses from at least one prototype fracture detection system in each of these categories are compared for a limestone interval of consistent lithology. Most fractures contained in the core from the test interval... Details

There are a number of significant differences between non-petroleum and petroleum logging. Mineral logging is generating enough income to begin to support its own R and D effort. As a result new tools and techniques designed specifically for mineral work are beginning to appear. Differences between non-petroleum and petroleum logging appear in the type of depositional environment, borehole usage, tool design and interpretational technique. While the two areas have much to offer each... Details
